Because the history of the building is an important part of the Sixth Floor Museum’s mission, the design of the seventh floor reflects the building’s past, but in a manner befitting a gallery. The new gallery doubles the Museum’s exhibit space, which can be reconfigured easily with twelve-foot high sliding panels that vary in length from seven to twenty-one feet and are constructed to accommodate the display of art. New construction reveals and responds to the history of the space instead of simply copying it, evoking the industrial past without replicating it. While the finish out has an intentionally rough hewn quality appropriate for this historically important former warehouse, the mechanical and electrical systems are technologically sophisticated. The flexibility of the galleries and engineering systems, combined with a historically sensitive renovation, will enable the museum to expand its mission without sacrificing its past.
