HOLLIDAY PARK NATURE CENTER

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA | 13,000 SQFT | COMPLETED IN 2000

This nature center in one of Indianapolis’ oldest and largest parks serves as a communicative link between people and nature. The building is nestled into the ground, which creates a quiet outdoor court and gathering space in front of an existing group of white cedars and a historic pergola. Visitors must filter through this natural portal to reach the building. The Nature Center’s comprehensive program is organized in a simple and straightforward plan, and includes classrooms, an exhibit hall, indoor/outdoor wildlife observation area, library, auditorium and offices. Natural light, natural materials, and principles of energy conservation were incorporated into the design and special attention was given to the needs of small children and individuals with disabilities. The building seeks to instill in visitors a curiosity and respect for the natural world.

“This 13,000 square foot structure of stone, copper, glass and concrete manages a rare feat of architectural diplomacy in the midst of this lovely Northside park: it interrupts without intruding.”
